New Paintings by Tim Biskup
Tim Biskup’s “Arrangements” is a new series of paintings based on the floral still-life, a mode that the artist has returned to frequently for the past several years. It’s probably because he’s getting old and thinking about death and the ephemeral nature of everything, but he’s been painting skulls since he was a child and that’s pretty on-the-nose momento mori. Maybe he’s just sensitive to the coming darkness and wants to prepare for it. The thing that stands out with this show is that some of the vessels have faces with particular expressions on them, revealing them to be something like a self-portrait which the artist has claimed is true of all of his art, in some sense. He’s been sinking more and more deeply into the personal for his entire career, so this is no surprise. Perhaps he’s just owning it more. Showing us more of his true colors. But, it could be he just likes painting flowers.
