Sometimes the ordinary becomes unforgettable. In Blink Your Eyes, Abel Macias captures fleeting moments of daily life—flower arrangements, views from windows, plants in the park—painted as if they were mental photographs, preserved in memory.

Abel Macias (B.F.A., SCAD, 2002) is a Los Angeles–based painter, muralist, and illustrator. His work draws from Mexican folk art and the beauty of everyday patterns and landscapes.

Face Guts is pleased to present Blink Your Eyes, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles–based artist Abel Macias.

The exhibition reflects on fleeting moments of observation—instances where the eye lingers and transforms the ordinary into something memorable. For Macias, sketching has long been a way to contemplate and preserve these fragments of daily life. His recent work draws inspiration from flower arrangements created at home, glimpses from Airbnb windows while traveling, plants encountered in the park, and moments of quiet pause.

To blink your eyes while looking at something is like the shutter of a camera,” Macias explains. “Focus on a subject, blink your eyes, and keep that mental photo with you inside your mind’s eye.

Rendered with sensitivity and rooted in his ongoing dialogue with Mexican folk art, Macias’ paintings explore the interplay of memory, perception, and the beauty of everyday objects. The exhibition invites viewers to consider their own moments of looking—to recognize the photographs we carry not on film, but within ourselves.

Artist Statement

BLINK YOUR EYES.

Sometimes ordinary moments in your day to day life become a picture you come back to over and over in your memory. I often find myself drawing in my sketchbook as a way to contemplate and memorialize a moment.

This year,  my sketchbooks are filled with drawings of flowers arrangements that I made at home, views from my airbnb window while traveling to other places, plants I see while walking through the park and sitting down for a moment. These paintings are a moment I stopped to look.

To blink your eyes while looking at something is like the shutter of a camera, capturing a photo. Focus on a subject, BLINK YOUR EYES, and keep that mental photo with you inside your minds eye.
